~What is your principal occupation and what circumstances lead to it?~
Principal? Did I enter the education field without realising it?
Since I’m going to be returning to my previous position as a nanny next month when school begins, I’m going to talk about that as my “principal occupation”.
I’ve been a part-time nanny since January 2008. I came into this position quite by chance. I wasn’t interested in going back to work . . . was enjoying being a homemaker only . . . having time to go to the Temple when I wanted, and to visit with dear friends while Christopher was at school. I was also having some health issues at the time that I believed would prevent me from holding down a regular job.
At our monthly Girls’ Night Out in November 2007, one of my friends mentioned that she was going to be going back to work part-time in the new year and needed someone to look after her youngest daughter. I casually wondered about the hours and such, and then promptly forgot about it.
In December, Lora called me and asked if I was still interested in looking after her little girl. I explained the situation with my health and said that even though our family could use the extra money, I wasn’t sure my health would be up to it.
Long story shorter, my health issue miraculously cleared up in mid-December, allowing me to take the job as a favour to Lora. And, well . . . I love my job! It’s ended up that I’ve had all 3 of her daughters in my care at some point (during the summer or after school), and have come to love those sweet girls like they were my own. Christopher has also come with me to work (again, in the summertime or after school) and is like a big brother to the 3 of them. It truly is an ideal situation.
I mean, where else could I have found a job that allows me to watch “Curious George” on PBS, sing along to Veggie Tales music CDs and work on needlework?

I liked reading this; you’ve mentioned that you nanny but I loved reading more about it: how it came to be, your feelings about it, etc.
And haha — “principal.” I don’t know if I would’ve caught that. (I’d like to think I would. But I didn’t right away!!)

I wish I enjoyed watching little ones, but I just don’t! Maybe that will change when my grandchildren start coming along!

I didn’t realize you still had the nanny job. How fun! Those girls are pretty lucky to have you watch them.
